چکیده

This paper compares three heuristic search algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), simulated annealing (SA) and tabu search (TS), for hardware-software partitioning. The algorithms operate on functional blocks for designs represented as directed acyclic graphs, with the objective of minimising processing time under various hardware area constraints. The comparison involves a model for calculating processing time based on a nonincreasing first-fit algorithm to schedule tasks, given that shared resource conflicts do not occur. The results show that TS is superior to SA and GA in terms of both search time and quality of solutions. In addition, we have implemented an intensification strategy in TS called penalty reward, which can further improve the quality of results.

Extending the Kernighan/Lin Heuristic for Hardware and Software Functional Partitioning

The Kernighan/Lin graph partitioning heuristic, also known as min-cut or group migration, has been extended over several decades very successfully for circuit partitioning. Those extensions customized the heuristic and its associated data structure to rapidly compute the minimum-cut metric central to circuit partitioning; as such, those extensions are not directly applicable to other problems. ...

A New Approach for Task Level Computational Resource Bi-partitioning

An essential problem for hardware/software codesign is the partitioning of an application onto the computational resources. This paper presents a novel approach for the task level resource partitioning problem. Our approach is based on the Ant System algorithm, a meta-heuristic method inspired by the study of the behaviors of ants. In our algorithm, a collection of agents cooperate using distri...

Resource sharing estimation by Petri nets in PISH hardware/software co-design system

This work presents two approaches for computing the number of functional units in hardware/software codesign context. The proposed hardware/software codesign framework uses Petri net as common formalism for performing quantitative and qualitative analysis. The use of Petri net as an intermediate format allows to analyze properties of the specification and formally compute performance indices wh...

Runtime Assignment of Reconfigurable Hardware Components for Image Processing Pipelines

The combination of hardware acceleration and flexibility make FPGAs important to image processing applications. There is also a need for efficient, flexible hardware/software codesign environments that can balance the benefits and costs of using FPGAs. Image processing applications often consist of a pipeline of components where each component applies a different processing algorithm. Component...

DESC: A Hardware-Software Codesign Methodology for Distributed Embedded Systems

The hardware-software codesign of distributed embedded systems is a more challenging task, because each phase of codesign, such as copartitioning, cosynthesis, cosimulation, and coverification must consider the physical restrictions imposed by the distributed characteristics of such systems. Distributed systems often contain several similar parts for which design reuse techniques can be applied...
